How to remove unwanted LinkedIn connections
By Syft Data. Published .
To remove a LinkedIn connection, open their profile, click More, then Remove connection. LinkedIn doesn't notify them. If you post on LinkedIn to win business, remove the connections who don't fit your ICP and never engage: LinkedIn shows your posts to your network first, and it caps that network at 30,000.
Summary
- To remove one connection: open their profile, click More, then Remove connection.
- They aren't notified. Recommendations and endorsements between you are withdrawn.
- LinkedIn removes connections one at a time.
- Remove the ones who don't fit your ICP and never engage. Your posts reach your network first, and LinkedIn caps it at 30,000.
- Syft Data finds them for you and removes them from your account after you approve the list.
Why too many off-target connections limit your reach
LinkedIn shows your posts to your network first, and ranks each post by how relevant it is to each viewer.
- A connection who never engages with your topic doesn't lift a post.
- Connections who fit your ICP are the people whose reactions and comments you want, because they buy.
- LinkedIn caps you at 30,000 connections. Every connection who will never buy takes a place a buyer could have.
Our view is that a network made of your target audience does more for your posts than a large mixed one. LinkedIn doesn't publish how the makeup of your network affects reach.
Who to keep
- Anyone who fits your ICP: the kind of company you sell to, its size, and the role that buys.
- Anyone who has messaged you, commented on your posts or reacted to them.
- Customers, partners, investors, colleagues and people you know personally.
How to remove a LinkedIn connection
From their profile
- Go to the person's profile.
- Click More in the introduction section.
- Select Remove connection.
From your Connections list
- Click the My Network icon at the top of your homepage.
- Click the link that shows your number of connections.
- Click the More icon next to the person, then Remove connection.
- Click Remove in the pop-up.
In the LinkedIn app
- Open the person's profile.
- Tap More.
- Tap Remove connection, then tap Remove connection again to confirm.
Steps from LinkedIn Help, “Remove a connection on LinkedIn”. The person isn't notified. They no longer appear in your Contacts, and any recommendations or endorsements between you are withdrawn. They aren't restored if you connect again.
How to decide which connections to remove
- Write your ICP in one line: the kind of company, its size, and the role that buys.
- Download your connections: Settings & Privacy, Data privacy, Get a copy of your data, Connections. LinkedIn emails you a file with each connection's name, company, title and the date you connected.
- Mark the people whose company and title don't fit.
- Take off the list anyone you want to keep (above).
- Remove the rest a few at a time, every day.
For 20,000 connections that is a long list to check by hand, and LinkedIn removes one at a time.
Let Syft Data remove the connections who don't fit your ICP
Syft Data finds the connections outside your target audience and removes them from your LinkedIn for you, after you approve the list.
- 1
Syncs your connections
The Syft Chrome extension reads your LinkedIn connections in your own browser. There is no password to hand over, and nothing logs in to your LinkedIn account from a server.
- 2

You describe the companies you sell to and the roles that buy. Syft scores every connection against both and lists the ones who don't fit and never engaged with your posts.
- 3
Removes them after you approve
You review the list and approve it. Syft removes those connections from your LinkedIn through the extension, up to 500 a day.
- Free for 30 days

Questions about removing LinkedIn connections
- Does LinkedIn notify someone when you remove them as a connection?
- No. LinkedIn says the person won't be notified. They stop being a 1st-degree connection and no longer appear in your Contacts, and any recommendations or endorsements between you are withdrawn.
- Can you remove LinkedIn connections in bulk?
- LinkedIn removes connections one at a time, from a profile or from your Connections list. Syft Data finds the connections who don't fit your ICP and removes them for you through its Chrome extension, up to 500 a day, after you approve the list.
- Should I remove LinkedIn connections who aren't my target audience?
- Yes, if you post on LinkedIn to win business and they never engage. LinkedIn shows your posts to your network first and ranks each post by how relevant it is to each viewer, and it caps you at 30,000 connections. Each connection who will never buy takes a place a buyer could have.
- Will removing connections hurt my reach?
- Removing people who never engage takes no reactions or comments away from your posts. Keep everyone who fits your ICP or has engaged with you. LinkedIn doesn't publish how the makeup of your network affects reach.
- Can I reconnect with someone after removing them?
- Yes, by sending a new connection request. LinkedIn says recommendations and endorsements that were withdrawn are not restored when you reconnect.
- What is LinkedIn's connection limit?
- 30,000 first-degree connections. When you get near it, remove connections who don't fit your ICP and never engage with you.
